The Psychology Clinic offers a wide range of services to meet the varied needs of the people in the Northeast Georgia area. Psychological needs for which people can find help at the Clinic, include, but are not limited to, the following:

Depression represents a troubling concern for one in ten persons in our community. However, recent advances in treatment have given us a number of safe, effective and medication free approaches to relieving the personal and family consequences of depression. The Psychology Clinic is a leading institution in bringing these new and effective treatment approaches to our area.

Anxiety, loneliness, fears, panic, agoraphobia, worry, self-doubt, low self-esteem, and other emotional difficulties may be the result of many different issues or situations. A careful and comprehensive assessment of these problems at the Psychology Clinic can indicate the most effective approach to feeling better. Working together with a caring and concerned therapist can often reveal hidden strengths and capabilities.

Neuropsychological Assessment and Psychological Testing: The clinic provides a full range of intellectual, cognitive, and personality assessment. This includes but is not limited to emotional difficulties. Assessment may include:

> formulation of differential diagnoses

> descriptions of the extent and quality of cognitive, emotional, and/or motor dysfunction

> brain injury

> provision of estimates of baseline or premorbid levels of cognitive functioning, and recommendations for educational, vocational, and rehabilitation planning

Specific memory assessment services are also available (please check the Memory Assessment Program link).

Family Interaction: Treatment is focused on increasing understanding among all members of the family unit. Also, assessment and treatment of specific concerns are available.

Marital and Relationship Therapy: One in five couples reports chronic difficulty in discussing everyday problems, feelings of dissatisfaction in their relationship, and poor marital adjustment. These problems can, in turn, create stress, upset, depression, problems for children, and in many cases lead to divorce. At the Psychology Clinic, approaches to marital problems are tailored to the couple’s needs. Marital therapy at the Psychology Clinic is based on sound principles and approaches which have been shown to be effective in relieving a broad range of marital problems.

Sexual Problems: Forty percent of couples report sexual difficulties in their marital relationship at some point in the course of their married life. Problems may be more focused on the husband (e.g., difficulty attaining or keeping erections, premature ejaculation, low sexual desire) or may be more focused on the wife (e.g., difficulty having orgasms, difficulty becoming aroused, lack of interest). Fortunately, couple-based approaches and individual treatment approaches are available which can help effectively deal with these troubling problems and at the same time enhance and revitalize marriages in other ways.

Childhood Problems: The Psychology Clinic has long been recognized in the community as a source of high quality services in helping parents and teachers deal more effectively with children who have a wide range of problems, such as attention problems, hyperactivity, aggressiveness, social withdrawal, tantrums, school phobia, or academic problems. By helping children interact more effectively with their peers and achieve more effectively in the classroom, it is expected that many problems which could develop later may be effectively avoided.

Stress Management and Personal Adjustment: The Clinic offers services for problems in personal adjustment to such stressful situations as divorce, job loss, or other major life changes. The Clinic also provides aid in dealing with chronic stress and helps persons cope with stress-responsive conditions such as high blood pressure, chronic pain, headaches, and chronic tension.

Eating Disorders and Compulsive Behavior Patterns: Many persons find themselves trapped in patterns of behavior that are potentially harmful but which they feel powerless to overcome. The Psychology Clinic offers treatment for obesity, anorexia, bulimia, smoking, compulsive gambling, alcohol abuse, and other areas in which compulsive behavior is a problem.

Sexual Abuse and Rape: Many persons have psychological difficulties which are the result of traumatic experiences such as rape or incest. The Psychology Clinic provides help in managing symptoms such as anxiety, panic, depression, and loss of self-esteem. The Clinic also provides help and support in re-adjusting and feeling better again.

Social Interaction: Assistance is available for individuals experiencing difficulty in interpersonal situations. Communication skills are emphasized. Assertiveness training is also available.
